Digitalization Project for Maternity Logbooks

Efficient networking and digital support for a healthy pregnancy

Client

AOK NordWest was formed from the merger of AOK Schleswig-Holstein and AOK Westfalen-Lippe. For this reason, it is only responsible for the Westphalia region and the federal state of Schleswig Holstein for its approximately 3 million insured persons. AOK NordWest implemented the maternity log digitization project in collaboration with msg.

Challenge

A key challenge was to reduce the rate of premature and low birth weight births and increase the proportion of children who were fully breastfed four months after birth. In addition, there was a lack of established communication channels between pregnant women and midwives outside of telephone contact, which made continuous exchange and consultation difficult. Furthermore, there was a need to optimize the networking of gynecologists and midwives in order to gain a better insight into the support services used by pregnant women and thus ensure more targeted care.

Goal

To address these challenges, a project was launched to digitize the maternity log for web and mobile applications (iOS, Android). This project included the development of functionalities for user analysis, a messaging system, and a content management system (CMS). A technical concept and an operational concept were created for this purpose. Particular focus was placed on creating an IT security concept that met the requirements of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for basic IT protection, the state of the art, and the AOK security policy. The project also included the creation of the UI/UX design and the implementation of usability tests. Training materials, consisting of documentation and videos, as well as quality assurance measures rounded off the project.

Solution and benefits

The advantages for customers lie in particular in the interdisciplinary exchange between treatment teams via a web portal. This enables improved care for pregnant women and motivates them to actively work on improving their health and psychosocial situation as well as that of their child. Participation in the Federal Committee's Innovation Fund also underscores the innovative strength and added value of the project for the parties involved.
