Modelling of capacity and planning constraints
Feasible planning in production, procurement, and material supply depends on more than just capacity availability – it also requires the accurate handling of real-world constraints such as transport, storage, tools, and labour. While SAP standard capacity planning (as part of the PP component) provides powerful capabilities using work centres and capacity formulas, the configuration can be complex, oversized for certain scenarios, and lacking in flexibility for others.
The PPC Capacity & Constraints module closes this gap by offering practical, streamlined tools fully integrated into the SAP environment.

- Perform collective maintenance of work centres (e.g. machines and personnel) across selected time frames and periodicities.
- Avoid laborious, repetitive navigation through individual capacity types: shift sequences can now be reviewed and maintained jointly, reducing complexity and improving transparency.
In addition to work centre availability, planning often needs to account for other periodic constraints:
- Quantity limits per day or week
- Key component or material availability
- Storage bin or transport restrictions
- Tooling and personnel limitations
The module allows specific constraints to be maintained for all these areas, either generally or at product-specific level. For example:
- Limit machine A to 100 kg per week
- Allow a maximum of 10 units of Material X per day
Enhance sequencing control with additional rules for machine usage.
- Define sequence constraints for critical bottlenecks
- Model machine behaviour more realistically by aligning with actual shop floor capabilities
The module also offers monitoring and evaluation tools to analyze constraint violations across all maintained scenarios. This helps planners identify and resolve bottlenecks and inconsistencies early – before they impact the production schedule.
