MOSA 

The Modular Open Systems Approach as a principle for architectural autonomy and evolvability

MOSA, the Modular Open Systems Approach, is an architectural and governance approach for modular, open systems that can be further developed over the long term. The focus is on interoperability, evolvability, architectural autonomy and technological sovereignty. For aerospace and defence systems, this means that systems should not only be high-performing today, but should also be able to integrate new technologies, software components, data models and contributions from partners in a controlled manner in the future.

In practice, MOSA supports the design of clear interfaces, reusable components, shared data models and verifiable architectural compliance. In combination with NATO-compliant architectural frameworks such as NAFv4, digital engineering, sound data management and clear governance, MOSA helps to ensure that complex mission ecosystems are interoperable, connectable and manageable in the long term.

NATO C3 taxonomy

Common technical reference for interoperable C3 capabilities, services and applications

The NATO C3 taxonomy is a common reference model for Consultation, Command and Control (C3) and the associated capabilities, services, information products and applications. It establishes a uniform technical language for NATO Enterprise C3 Capabilities and ICT services, thereby supporting structured planning, architectural work and the further development of networked military information and command and control systems.

At its core lies the principle of ‘Interoperability by Design’: capabilities, services and interfaces should be described and designed from the outset in such a way that they remain interoperable across organisational, mission and system boundaries. The taxonomy is organisation-neutral, mission-independent and flexible in terms of solutions. It does not prescribe any specific technology, but provides reusable architectural building blocks for capability planning, enterprise architecture, portfolio management and NATO-compliant system integration.

The C3 taxonomy is particularly relevant to networked air operations because it provides a structured description of key capability areas such as Command and Control, Communication and Information Systems, Information Management and Battlespace Management. It thus supports the integration of mission planning, ISR, situational awareness, data management, communications services, user applications and command and control support into a common architectural framework.
